Dream Team NBA Captain Options – Week 13

Updated: March 15, 2021

Week 12 is best left in the rear view mirror after injuries and load management wreaked havoc with some teams.  Our captain’s choice, Luka Doncic, was rested on a short week by coach Carlisle which was a head-scratcher.  Bam Adebayo, Bradley Beal, Joel Embiid, Demar Derozan, Kristaps Porzingis and Clint Capela also missed time and were fairly popular trade-ins this past week.

Jimmy Butler stood out, amassing an impressive 124 from his 3 games, the clear standout scorer in week 12.  Bigs Vucevic and Valanciunas put in some nice numbers as well with 101 and 98, whilst  Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook also had fine weeks with 92 points and 94 points respectively.  Giannis also looked after the coaches who decided to keep him in this week, despite only playing 2 games  (and only 5 over this fortnight), he grounded a whopping 88 points in just 2 games.

If you’re going to competing for overall and want to place in the cash prizes, you will need to be savvy dodging these missed games, keep tabs on scheduling with Archie’s latest article here.  There will be more resting for star players as the season winds down and some of these higher-seeded teams lock away playoff births and others are eliminated from the playoff race.

Week 12 was also the 2nd week of the eliminator and if you scored in excess of 600 you should be moving on to the next round.

Captaincy Considerations

We have one team with 5 games this week with the Lakers, but I’m hesitant to believe that Lebron plays all 5 and with AD still out, there really aren’t any other fantasy relevant players worth considering, let alone for captaincy.  On the slip side, the Pelicans and Thunder both only play 6 games across the next fortnight and I would heavily consider trading out the likes of Williamson, Ingram and Gilgeous-Alexander if they are on your squad.

  • Lebron James still can’t be ignored this week.  His average did dip below 30 fantasy points a game after the 1 lacklustre game this past week, but he is still a top 10 player and worth bringing in just for the 9 game potential fortnight alone.

  • James Harden will be a popular selection this week and for good reason.  Durant is still without a firm date for return and expected to miss a couple more games at least and I don’t see the Nets rushing him back too soon from a hamstring injury.  The 4th highest average this season and a score of 150 is not out of the question.

  • Nikola Jokic will always feature in my column where Denver features with 4 games or more.  Add into the fact that the Nuggets have 4 home games this week against favourable opponents in Indiana, Charlotte, Chicago and New Orleans.  The battle for seeding in the West is strong and you could do a lot worse than putting the Captain’s armband on the Joker.

  • Steph Curry still looks adamant to make the Warriors relevant this year and push for a playoff birth.  They had a comfortable win over the league-leading Jazz in the past 24 hours.  4 favourable games for Steph this week as well, but I expect the Rockets to be blown out again as they have clearly started to tank

  • Damian Lillard continues to pump out consistent score after consistent score.  He may just be down slightly from the top tiered players on average, but I can’t recommend bringing him in enough to your squads.  Another 8 games this fortnight and Dame rarely takes days off.

  • Jimmy Butler is really recapturing his form to that of the bubble after a slow start to the season.  Bam’s likley return this week may hinder his output slightly, but much like Dame, Jimmy Buckets is almost a must have on your team considering his price and production as his value should go past $15 million on this current form

  • Luka Doncic a slow week for our captaincy pick last week, but with 4 games this week you just can’t ignore him.  2 games vs the Clippers and Blazers each this week should see some more Luka magic as these are 2 teams the Mavs a vying for in the clustered playoff race in the west.  Worth noting that the Blazers give up the most fantasy points to opposing PGs as well!

Other potential candidates include Bradley Beal, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, Zach Lavine and Ben Simmons

Will’s Captain – Nikola Jokic

It is vanilla and easy to just ahead with the leading fantasy scorer again with the captaincy, but the tipping point for me was the 4 game home slate without a back to back. Jokic doesn’t tend to rest much either, so for me, he gets the nod ahead of Lebron
