Dream Team NBA Captain Options – Week 9

Updated: February 15, 2021

Week 9 is heating up and the majority of teams have a 4 game slate and 14 teams have 8 games over the next fortnight.  Last week we looked at some low percentage players to bring in as PODs, so to change it up a little, we’ll feature some players to cash out on and look at those extremely important mid-season cash cows!

  • Jarred Vanderbilt has absolutely peaked and earned over $2 million if you jumped on him a few weeks ago when Towns was first injured and then out due to covid.   The Twolves are almost back to a full-strength squad and it’s time this cow was sent out to pasture.

  • Bradley Beal has been one of the top fantasy players this season, but this past week he has sat for rest purposes and with all of the trade rumours circulating I would be trading him out for Butler or Lavine, both of who have 4 games this week as a straight sideways trade.

  • Tyler Herro has been moved to a role off the bench and additional had to miss games due to contact tracing this past week, his value hasn’t expanded as much as punters would have expected and should be upgraded with some of the other trades you make this week.

  • Keldon Johnson’s hot start to the season looks to have peaked now with the second year player now putting up very inconsistent numbers, he has made close to $2 million and if you had him on your bench this whole time he is the perfect candidate to downgrade.

  • Jerami Grant has peaked now, this past week saw his first price drop, but if you had him from week one he has made over $3 million and as far as I’m considered, job done.

Now for a closer look at some of the cheapies you should really be looking to get in before the ship has sailed

  • Chuma Okeke has just returned from injury and it has coincided with Aaron Gordon’s injury who is now missing a few weeks.  Priced at $3 290 00 this price is too low to pass up, bring him in this week!

  • Anfernee Simmons is earning regular minutes off the bench with Portland and whilst McCollum is out for another couple of weeks, this would be the last realistic week you can jump on at $3 620 000

  • Kenrich Williams has earned himself a lot more minutes due to the player outs at OKC, his role going forward is questionable, but even for one week he will earn some good coin and is only $4 750 000

  • Kira Lewis didn’t see much game time over the first 2 months of the season, but a stronger outing this past week makes him a good candidate to bring in at an almost basement price of $2 790 000

  • Sadiq Bey had an impressive week and whilst Detroit have had some injuries, he is another to target this week, he’ll make money as long as he takes the court this coming week, get on board at $3 840 000

Captaincy Considerations

As mentioned above, we have a very heavy schedule with plenty of teams playing 4 game weeks over the next fortnight.  I’ll go over the 6 best candidates in my book.

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo had a sensational past week, notching up a massive 175 points.  I wrote him off slightly last week due to the schedule, but no matter the opponent, there doesn’t seem to be slowing down the Greek Freak.   4 games at home this week, two against Toronto and one game vs Sacramento and OKC.  These are favourable matchups and I’d be looking to bring him into the squad at the very least if not already on your team

  • Steph Curry had a pretty good week himself, racking up 132 points.  He has a pair of home and a pair of away games with varying degrees of match up strengths.  Still underpriced at $13 130 000, its no wonder he is in 54% of teams and the highest selected player to date.

  • James Harden cracked the tonne despite only playing 3 games this week and with Kevin Durant set to miss some more time, he is another worthy candidate for the captaincy armband.  There is a 3 game road trip this week, but don’t let that discourage you too much, I wouldn’t expect anything less than 130 from him this week

  • Joel Embiid was another player to surge past 100 points this week in only a 3 game slate.  Games at Utah and Toronto are split with a couple at home vs Houston and Chicago, both of these he should go very large, the only problem here is some potential blowouts.

  • Kawhi Leonard may still be without Paul George this week as his playing status is in doubt.  Kawhi does have 4 home games this week, albeit with a couple of games vs Utah who have been keeping opponents at bay of recent weeks.  I fully expect him to surpass the tonne this week, but other candidates are looking marginally better.

  • Nikola Jokic another big outing this past week, he continues to show us why he is the number one scoring player this season.  4 road games this week on an East coast swing at Boston, Washington, Charlotte and Atlanta.  I’d expect nothing less than another week pushing towards a score of 150.

If you’re looking for any other rough candidates, the best of the rest include Bam Adebayo, Zach Lavine, Jonas Valaciunas and Trey Young.

Captain’s Pick – Giannis Antetokounmpo

It is a vanilla pick, but the form and schedule for Giannis is just too hard to ignore.  Slap the armband on him and sleep well knowing you will likely see a score in excess of 300.
