RDT NBA Schedule Analysis – Week 22 – Tankapalooza

IT’S FINALS TIME BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Week 22 represents the start of NBA Fantasy finals in Real Dream Team. Well done to all those who made the top 8 of their leagues. Good luck in you finals series.

Unfortunately for us, Fantasy finals also matches up perfectly with Tanking Time in the NBA. For those that are unaware of how tanking in the NBA works, it’s pretty simple. The lower you finish in the season standings, the more likely you are to get a higher draft pick. This means that for those teams who are now out of the NBA Finals race, the incentive to lose outweighs the incentive to win.

There are two forms of tanking:

Subtle Tanking: Teams will announce that players have ‘season ending’ injuries (which at any other point in the season would only be a few games) or they will send players for surgery now, instead of waiting until the end of the season and allowing the player to play through the injury.

Active Tanking: This less common, but does happen. In fact, the Chicago Bulls have already been warned by the NBA for this. This is when a team just doesn’t play one of it’s players who would normally be in the active rotation. Effectively giving them a ‘DNP-Tanking’ on the box-score. The Bulls were doing this with Robin Lopez and Justin Holiday.

From a Fantasy perspective, it normally doesn’t have too much of an impact, as teams at the bottom end of the NBA ladder don’t typically produce a lot of Fantasy relevant players. Still, it is worth being aware of of these teams, and take this into account if you are looking at picking up players from these teams.

Tanking Teams

Memphis

Phoenix

Atlanta

Orlando

Sacramento

Dallas

Chicago

New York

On the other end of the spectrum are the teams that already have locked away a Finals spot. I will talk more about this next week, as the standings are not locked in yet. However, a great example of this is the Golden State Warriors, who this week cancelled practice as everyone was too hungover from Steph Curry’s 30th birthday party. Now there is a team I want to be a part of. If you have a spare 10 minutes, here is what goes down when money is no object for a birthday party. Klay Thompson dancing barefoot is classic.
